Why ending a lease early can be expensive, and when it isn’t
A lease is a contract to pay for the car’s depreciation over a set term. If you hand it back early, the lender still wants that money, so the standard early termination clause usually charges the remaining payments plus a fee, minus what the car is worth. That is why most people assume they are stuck.
What changes the math is your car’s current value. If the car is worth more than your payoff, you may have equity, and getting out early can cost little or nothing. If it is worth less, there are still ways to shrink the gap. The only way to know is to look at your real payoff and your car’s real value side by side, which is what we do for you.
Option 1: Trade it in with us
We take trade-ins, even if your car is still leased. If it’s worth more than you owe, the extra goes toward your next car or into your pocket. Learn more about trade-ins.
Option 2: Upgrade early into a new lease
Manufacturers sometimes run early upgrade or pull-ahead programs that waive some of your remaining payments if you lease another car from the same brand. When one is available, it can be the cheapest way out. We check current programs for your brand and compare them with selling the car outright.
Option 3: Transfer the lease to someone else
Some lenders allow a lease to be transferred to a new driver who takes over the payments. Rules and fees vary by lender, and some do not allow transfers at all. If yours does, it can be a low-cost exit, especially if you have a lot of months left.
Option 4: Buy the car out yourself
You can pay off the lease and own the car, then keep it or sell it privately. This makes sense when the payoff is below what the car would sell for, or when you have simply decided you want to keep it.
Option 5: Use the early termination clause
Turning the car in to the lender and paying the early termination charge is the most direct option, and usually the most expensive. We only recommend it when the numbers show it beats every other route.

- Your lender’s name and your current payoff amount (on your lender’s website or app, or we can help you request it).
