The credit score myth that stops people from even trying

The most common reason drivers don’t fill out a lease Credit Application is the assumption that their credit isn’t good enough. But approvals aren’t as binary as “good credit gets approved, bad credit doesn’t.” Lenders look at the full picture: your score, payment history, debt-to-income ratio, length of credit history and sometimes employment stability. A 680 with clean recent history is often a better application than a 720 with a 90-day late payment from last year.

The second myth is that applying will wreck your score. A credit inquiry for a car lease usually has a small, temporary effect, and multiple inquiries for the same type of credit within a 14–45 day window typically count as one. What does add up is applying at dealership after dealership. Working with a broker means we know which lender fits your profile before your application goes out.

What lease lenders actually look at

Captive lenders, the finance arms of automakers like Honda Financial, Toyota Financial Services and BMW FS, each set their own approval tiers. Tier 1 gets the best money factor. Tiers 2 and 3 still get approved, at a slightly higher money factor. The difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 on a 36-month lease is often $20–$40 a month, not hundreds.

Beyond the score itself, lenders focus on recent derogatory marks: late payments in the past 12 months, collections, repossessions or open bankruptcies matter more than an overall score in the low 600s with no recent issues. Drivers who’ve been rebuilding for 12–18 months with clean recent history are often surprised by what they qualify for.

Co-signers, security deposits and other options

If your credit is still a work in progress, there are practical paths forward. A co-signer with stronger credit (a spouse, parent or business partner) can move you up one or two tiers. Some lenders also accept a refundable security deposit to offset perceived risk.

Loyalty history matters too: some lenders look more favorably on applicants who’ve previously leased or financed with the same brand. An experienced broker knows which lenders are most likely to approve your profile, so you avoid shotgunning applications and collecting hard pulls.

How to start your Credit Application

The secure Credit Application takes about five minutes. You share basic personal and employment information, we review your credit, and we come back, typically the same day, with a realistic picture of what you qualify for, which tiers you’d land in and an estimated payment range on the vehicles you’re interested in.

There’s no commitment to proceed. If you’d rather talk it through first, call +1 (267) 216-6659. We’re available Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 7 PM.
