What Car Should I Lease? How to Pick by Budget, Family Size and Commute

Start with three questions, not a brand. Here's how I narrow it down for customers every day, with real examples from this month.

Short answer: don't start with a brand. Start with three things: the monthly payment you're comfortable with, who rides with you, and how you drive. Those three answers cut a list of 300 models down to a handful, and then the deals of the month decide the winner.

1. Set your monthly budget first

When I worked in the finance office, the customers who got the best deals walked in knowing their number. Pick the payment you'd be comfortable with even in a slow month, and decide how much cash you want to put down at signing. A little more down lowers the payment; less down raises it. $0 down available — your exact signing amount is in your quote.

Keep in mind that lease specials are advertised before sales tax. In PA, sales tax adds about 9% to the monthly payment, so a $400 special is closer to $436 a month all in.

2. Count who rides with you

  • Mostly just you, or you and one passenger: a sedan or a small SUV. Sedans usually lease for less. This month the 2027 Toyota Corolla LE is $290 a month for 39 months with 10,000 miles a year, and the 2026 Nissan Sentra SR is $316 a month for 36 months with 5,000 miles a year.
  • A small family, car seats, a dog: a midsize 2-row SUV gives you the back-seat and cargo room. The 2026 Nissan Rogue SV AWD is $305 a month for 36 months with 5,000 miles a year.
  • Five or more, or two car seats plus friends: look at 3-row SUVs. The 2026 Nissan Pathfinder SV 4WD is $379 a month for 36 months with 5,000 miles a year, and the 2027 INFINITI QX60 LUXE AWD is $573 a month for 36 months with 10,000 miles a year if you want luxury.

3. Think about how you drive

  • Long commute: miles matter more than the car. A 40-mile round trip is about 10,000 miles a year before weekends, so price 12,000 or 15,000 miles if you need them. A hybrid can save real money on gas; the 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE is $441 a month for 39 months with 10,000 miles a year.
  • Snow, hills or a long driveway: look for AWD or 4WD in the trim name. Most of the SUVs above come with it.
  • Towing a boat or a camper: a pickup. The 2026 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Double Cab 4X4 is $395 a month and the 2026 Toyota Tundra SR5 CrewMax 4X4 is $524 a month, both for 39 months with 10,000 miles a year.

Every payment above is the monthly payment plus sales tax, with $2,000 due at signing (first payment, fees, title and registration included), Tier 1 credit and no security deposit, ending November 30, 2026. The Corolla, Camry and Tundra payments include the 2026 Toyota Lease Loyalty Program, so you'd need to qualify. Deals change every month; see this month's best lease deals for what's live today.

4. Let the deals of the month break the tie

Once you have two or three cars that fit, the cheapest one to lease is whichever has the strongest program that month. Manufacturers put lease cash on different models every month, so a car that was expensive last month can be the best deal today. That's the part I handle: I shop multiple dealers and every fee is shown upfront, so you compare the real numbers, not the ads.

FAQ

Picking the right car to lease, answered

Don’t see yours? Call +1 (267) 216-6659. We’re happy to walk through your situation.

What is a good monthly budget for a lease?

Pick the payment you'd be comfortable with even in a slow month, then decide how much cash you want to put down at signing. Every dollar you put down lowers the payment a little, and $0 down available — your exact signing amount is in your quote.

Should I lease an SUV or a sedan?

If you carry more than four people often, need car seats in the back row or drive in a lot of snow, an SUV usually makes more sense. If it's mostly you and one passenger, a sedan is often cheaper to lease and better on gas.

How many miles should I lease for?

Take your daily round trip, multiply by about 250 working days, then add your weekend and vacation driving. Pick the next mileage tier up. Buying miles at signing costs less than paying for extra miles at turn-in.
