How to keep a lease under your budget
- Compare the same terms. A lower payment at 5,000 miles a year isn't cheaper than a higher one at 10,000 if you drive 12,000. Match the miles, term and due at signing before you compare.
- Look at the total, not just the payment. Multiply the payment by the term and add what's due at signing. That's what the lease really costs.
- Stay flexible on trim and color. The trim with the strongest program that month is often the cheapest way into a car, even if it isn't the one on the lot.
- Ask about loyalty and conquest programs. If you own or lease a car from the same brand, or a competing brand, you may qualify for a better payment.
- Time it. Programs change at the start of each month and at model-year changeovers, so a car just over your budget this month can fit it next month.
