Why businesses lease instead of buy

For small businesses, sole proprietors and growing companies, leasing offers advantages that buying rarely matches. Lower payments preserve working capital. Fixed terms make budgeting predictable. And at the end of the term you hand the vehicle back instead of dealing with depreciation, trade-ins or selling a used fleet car.

The tax picture is often favorable too: businesses can typically deduct the business-use portion of lease payments as an operating expense. Purchases, by contrast, involve Section 179 limits, depreciation schedules and luxury caps. Talk to your accountant about your situation, but for many small businesses a lease is the most tax-efficient path.

How multi-vehicle business approvals work

A business application differs from a personal one. Lenders want to see your entity type (LLC, S-Corp, sole proprietor), your EIN, two to three years of business financials or tax returns, and sometimes a personal guaranty. Businesses under two years old usually need a personal guaranty regardless of structure. That’s standard.

For fleets, lenders evaluate the business as a whole rather than vehicle by vehicle. If your business qualifies at Tier 1, every vehicle gets the best available money factor. We handle fleet applications from two vehicles up to full commercial fleets and manage the paperwork so you don’t coordinate with each lender separately.

Structuring a business lease the right way

A common mistake is leasing personally and deducting business mileage after the fact. It works, but putting the lease in the business name from the start is usually cleaner: you deduct the payment directly instead of tracking mileage logs.

Some manufacturers also run commercial lease programs (through Ford, GM, Ram and others) with different residuals and money factors than their consumer programs. An independent broker who knows where to look will often beat a dealership’s business desk.
